If you’re a self-employed or an independent contractor and received an award notice showing $0 in unemployment insurance benefits, you may be eligible for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA).

As part of the CARES Act, the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program helps business owners, self-employed, independent contractors, and people with limited work history, who are out of business or have reduced business due to COVID-19 and don’t qualify for regular unemployment insurance benefits.


The program covers up to 39 weeks of unemployment beginning February 2, 2020, through December 26, 2020. If you qualify for regular unemployment insurance benefits, do not file a PUA claim.
